Gerbar (Two Brothers)
Situated in the Torres Strait Region's Central Islands 20 kilometres northwest of Iama (Yam Island), the high basaltic outcrop of Gerber (a.k.a. Gebar, Gerbar, Gabba, Two Brothers) was sighted by Luis Vaez de Torres' Spanish expedition on 10 September 1606 and William Bligh's second breadfruit expedition on 11 September 1792. Bligh named 'an island with two hills' The Brothers, and it has subsequently appeared on maps and charts under variations on that moniker or of the indigenous name.
While the island is currently uninhabited, it is recognised as the traditional domain of the Gebaralgal, who now reside on Iama..
