Central Islands
(Kulkalgal Nation)Predictably, the Central Islands lie in the middle of Torres Strait, consisting mainly of small sandy coral cays surrounded by reefs, similar to those found in the Great Barrier Reef. However, the more northerly islands, including Gerbar (Two Brothers) and Iama (Yam Island), are basaltic outcrops, not cays. Culturally and linguistically, the high basaltic Nagi belongs with this group. The low-lying coral cays are mostly less than two to three kilometres long and less than 800 metres wide).
