Aloomba
Located approximately 6 kilometres east of Gordonvale and 22 kilometres south of Cairns, the township and rual locality of Aloomba takes its name from the Yidinji Ngalumba, signifying the hard milkwood tree (Alstonia muelleriana).
Hemmed in by the Malbon Thompson Range to the east and the northern end of the Bellenden Ker Range to the west, the locality lies on the Mulgrave River and the Bruce Highway, which bypasses the township.
The North Coast railway line enters the locality from the south, running parallel to the highway, then veers east to pass through the town before rejoining the highway near Gordonvale.
The Mulgrave River passes east of the town, with the flatland along its course largely used for growing sugar cane, which is processed at the Mulgrave Central Mill.
