Mission River

Split between Weipa Town, the Cook Shire and the Napranum Aboriginal Shire in Luthigh and Awngthim country, the coastal locality of Mission River takes its name from the river formed by the confluence of Myall Creek and Pappan Creek which discharges into Albatross Bay near Weipa. The river's 37-kilometre course drains a 2,697 square kilometre catchment that includes 247 square kilometres of estuarine wetlands.

Mission River takes its name from the Aboriginal mission established near the present town of Weipa by the Presbyterian Church. It was probably given in 1895 by missionary J. Nicholas Hey ot Government Resident of Thursday Island John Douglas. The locality includes the enclaves of Evans Landing, Nanum, Rocky Point, Trunding, and Weipa Airport, all of which are part of Weipa Town.
