Petford

Located on Mbarbaram country on the Burke Developmental Road in Mareeba Shire, 65 kilometres west-southwest of Mareeba, 101 kilometres west-southwest of Cairns and 117 kilometres west-northwest of Innisfail, Petford takes its name from the railway station named after John Joseph Petford, a long-serving official of Queensland Railways Department.

The station was on the first section of Chillagoe Railway & Mining Company's line from Mareeba to Mount Garnet which opened in 1900. Although the station no longer operates, the Savannahlander tourist train passes through Petford on Wednesdays en route to its overnight stop in Almaden and on the return journey on Saturday.

The former mining towns of Koorboora and Lappa are within the locality.
