Douglas

Eleven kilometres southwest of the city's historical CBD and less than two kilometres from its 21st-century equivalent, Townsville's university and residential suburb, Douglas, is named after Queensland Supreme Court judge Robert Johnstone Douglas (1883-72), who practised law in Townsville from 1907.

With Ross River as the suburb's northern boundary, the area was initially known as Ross River Plains. By the time James Cook University's new campus was opened in 1970, residential development had begun in a Townsville City Council-managed area between the access road to the University campus (Angus Smith Drive) and Ross River.

Subsequent developments in the suburb have seen the Bruce Highway rerouted through the Douglas Arterial Road, which became the Townsville Ring Road when the highway through Bohle Plains connected with the northern highway at Mount Low. Residential development has continued into the Mount Stuart foothills, and Townsville General Hospital was relocated to become Townsville University Hospital in 2001.
