Kirwan

Located in Wulgurukaba country, eleven kilometres west-southwest of central Townsville, Kirwan is a primarily residential suburb with some commercial property concentrated along Thuringowa Drive.

Although Kirwan, named after an early farming family in the vicinity, is the northernmost of four similarly named suburbs created along the western side of the Upper Ross River in 1968, the suburb has minimal river frontage. The southern boundary runs along Ross River Road and Hervey Range Road, with the Weir State School, Riverway Stadium, and the riverside parkland officially part of Thuringowa Central. To the north, the boundary runs along Dalrymple Road, with Heatley and Cranbrook to the east of a boundary that does not run along a thoroughfare. On the other side of an extensive belt of recreational space, the Bohle River forms the western boundary.

European settlement in the area dates back to Townsville's early days. A camping reserve at a bend on the Ross River for travellers on the old Charters Towers Road dates back to 1872, and Ross River Provisional School (later The Weir State School, named after the nearby Black Weir), established nearby in 1881, was the region's second educational establishment. Rapid growth in the suburb through the 1970s and 1980s saw a succession of new schools open — Kirwan State School (1977), Kirwan State High School, Ryan Catholic College (1979) and The Willows State School (1997).
