Wreck Creek

It seems that surveyor Alfred Arthur Hull named Wreck Creek, which flows into Rockingham Bay, 9 kilometres north of Cardwell, in Wargamaygan Country, after he noted a wreck at the creek's mouth on 20 September 1871.

Suggestions about the wreck's identity include the Lady Elliot "variously described as a whaler or merchantman, struck on a reef four miles from shore in Halifax Bay ... in 1815. This reef is now named Lady Elliot Reef after this ship as is the island by that name. Captain Rhodes, describing her as a whaler, identifies the wreck still lying in the mud to the north of Wreck Creek near Cardwell as the Lady Elliot." (Dorothy Jones, Cardwell Shire Story, p. 4; citing Capt. F. Rhodes, Pageant of the Pacific Vol. 1 — entry for 1815.)
