Russell River
Rising in the Bellenden Ker Range, below Mount Bartle Frere and Mount Bellenden Ker in Country, the 59-kilometre-long Russell River drains a 669 square kilometre catchment before discharging into the Coral Sea approximately 40 kilometres southeast of Cairns in an estuary it shares with the Mulgrave.
From its headwaters, the river flows southeast through the Wooroonooran National Park, joined by the Josephine Creek, before a 90-degree turn takes it across the Bruce Highway just under 3 kilometres south of Mirriwinni. From there, the Russell flows northwards, passing east of Babinda to reach its confluence with the Mulgrave.
The river's upper reaches are a popular location for whitewater rafting.
