What Mob Is That?

Ewamian

The Ewamian people (a.k.a. Agwamin) are the traditional custodians of an area that includes Cobbold Gorge, Einasleigh, Forsayth, Georgetown, Mount Surprise, Talaroo Hot Springs, and Undara Volcanic National Park.

According to Norman Tindale, their country covered 15,000 square kilometres around the headwaters of the Gilbert, Einasleigh and Copperfield Rivers, extending as far north as Georgetown, Mount Surprise, and Lancewood. Their eastern boundaries were around the Great Dividing Range. Their territory extended as far west as the headwaters of the Percy River.

Their language comprised two mutually intelligible dialects (Agwamin or Wamin). It is undergoing a modest revival after Peter Sutton documented it in the early 1970s with the assistance of Elder Fred Fulford. There was reputedly one surviving speaker of the language in 1981.

Their neighbours to the north were the Wakaman, with Mbabaram to the northeast, the Warungu and Gugu-Badhun to the east and the Gudjal to the southeast. Their southern neighbours were the Mbara, with the the Yanga, Takalak and Kurtjar to the west.
