North Queensland
While some government departments and instrumentalities combine Far North Queensland and North Queensland as a Northern Region, and others incorporate the Whitsundays and Mackay within the region, this site uses the 2016 Queensland Government Department of Trade and Investment's definition, with the Cardwell Range as the boundary between NQ and FNQ and the region extending west to the Northern Territory border, with the Flinders Highway and the Great Northern Railway line running more or less down the middle.
On that basis, North Queensland encompasses:
- Nine local government areas: Hinchinbrook, Townsville, Burdekin, Charters Towers, Flinders, Richmond, McKinlay, Cloncurry and Mount Isa;
- All or part of six state electoral districts: Burdekin, Hinchinbrook, Mundingburra, Thuringowa, Townsville and Traeger
