Port Clinton

This estuarine harbour on the eastern side of the Warginburra Peninsula in Darumbal country, identified by Matthew Flinders in 1802, was known as Port Bowen until 1892 when the name was changed to avoid confusion with Bowen, located around four hundred kilometres to the north-west.

The area around Port Clinton was listed on the Register of the National Estate in 1980 and has been part of the Shoalwater Bay Military Training area since 1965. Environmental considerations have prevented proposals to build a port at Port Clinton to export up to fifty million tons of coal from the Galilee Basin from attracting government approval.
