Central Queensland/ Capricornia Region
Extending along the Tropic of Capricorn from Rockhampton and the Capricorn Coast to the Northern Territory border, Central Queensland — alternatively labelled Capricornia — is imprecisely defined in terms of its borders. Administrative expedience has led various instrumentalities to include the area around Mackay in a region administered from Rockhampton rather than Townsville.
The transition between Central Queensland and its neighbours — North Queensland and Mackay/Isaac/Whitsunday to the north, and Wide Bay and Darling Downs/Southwest Queensland to the south — can be blurry, but the Tropic and the Central Western railway line, which extends to Longreach and Winton, provide a clearly defined core.
This site uses the 2016 Queensland Government Department of Trade and Investment definition, encompassing the following local government areas: Rockhampton, Gladstone, Banana, Woorabinda, Central Highlands, Barcaldine, Blackall-Tambo, Longreach, Winton, Barcoo, Boulia and Diamantina.
